During the Gulf War in 1991, the Iraqi army deployed an improved variant of the T-55 tank. This particular variant featured additional armor plates on the turret and hull to increase protection. The tanks were assigned to regular Iraqi armored units and supposedly served as command tanks. As they had no official designation, the coalition forces gave them the name "Enigma". Several were captured in the course of the conflict.

During the 1991 Gulf War, the Iraqi army fielded an upgraded variant of the T-55 tank.
